“CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOR ACTORS: TAKING
CONTROL OF YOUR OWN CAREER”
FACILITATED
BY ACTOR ADILAH BARNES
HOLLYWOOD
BLACK FILM FESTIVAL, JUNE 6TH
(Los
Angeles, Calif.) – As part of the 2003 showcase of infotainment panels at
the 5th Anniversary of the Hollywood Black Film Festival (HBFF),
award-winning actor, Adilah Barnes offers her workshop, “Career
Development For Actors: Taking Control Of Your Own Career,” Friday, June 6th,
5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, 7000 Hollywood
Boulevard, Hollywood, California. Tickets can be purchased in advance by
calling 323-655-TKTS.
The
HBFF is a non-profit organization whose mission and goal is to play an
integral role in discovering and launching independent films and filmmakers
by bringing them to the attention of industry, press and public.
This year, June 3 -8, almost 100 industry influentials
will grace panels to discuss issues designed to educate, inspire and empower
members of the Hollywood community as well as those interested in breaking
into the industry.
“Fourteen years ago, I decided to step out on
faith and leave the security of working a day job. At that time, I was
forced to choose between an opportunity to promote my solo show [by going to
a booking conference in Washington that I had been competitively selected to
attend] or to hold on to the security of a job that had nothing to do with
my career. By choosing my craft, doors began to open that have not yet
closed. I have worked on my own
terms and without a day job ever since.
“This
workshop will allow others to get a glimpse of how they, too, can control
the choices they make in their careers.
Participants can expect to walk away with the tool to create their
own game plan for autonomous success, as they choose to define it,” states
Barnes.
Says Barnes about her private coaching, “I
strategize with my one-on-one students a plan of action to move their
careers forward.” Barnes has
been an acting coach for over twenty years to countless of students in both
the Bay Area and Los Angeles that include some of Hollywood’s stars such
as Toni Braxton (for Play’d and Kingdom
Come); Jada Pinkett-Smith (for Set
It Off); Benjamin Bratt (Law &
Order); Lauren Lane (The Nanny);
comedian Don “DC” Curry (Friday
After Next) and many others. According to former
student Kym Whitley (Oh Drama),
“Adilah is intense, she’s not easy, but she never gives up on you and
pulls out your best.”
Barnes stresses that not all of her
students are aspiring actors. In
fact, some have included lawyers,
those who want to overcome their shyness and individuals involved in
different areas of the entertainment industry such as writers and directors
who want to become want to become more sensitive to the actors’ process. Barnes states that regardless of the motivation, everyone
benefits in some way from her acting classes
that are based in techniques from Constantin Stanislavski, Uta Hagen and
Viola Spolin.
Barnes
currently plays the recurring role of “Judge Randall” in For the People,
Lifetime
Television and portrays historical figure, “Ida B. Wells” in HBO’s Iron Jawed Angels starring
Angelica Houston and Hilary Swank (airing 2004). She is probably best known to film audiences for her role in
award-winnng Erin
Brockovich and Murder By Numbers
and to television audiences for her role as “Anne Marie” on
ABC’s award-winning Roseanne, for five seasons.
Barnes recently returned from shooting the ABC pilot, 111
Gramercy Park in Toronto, Canada.
She
will offer a 12-week Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival Wisdom
Wednesdays solo writing workshop beginning June 18th from 7-10pm.
