LOS ANGELES WOMEN’S THEATRE FESTIVAL
RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL’S
“GATEWAY TO THE AMERCAS” CONFERENCE – MEXICO CITY

JUNE 11 – 14, 2003

(Los Angeles, Calif.) - The Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival (LAWF) was recently awarded a full scholarship to attend Gateway to the Americas, Mexico's first booking conference featuring performing artists from Mexico and the rest of Latin America. Sponsored by the California Arts Council, Gateway to the Americas is a multicultural arts development program being held June 11th through June 14th at The Palacio Postal in Mexico City, Mexico.

The role of the California Arts Council in Gateway to the Americas results from its participation in a NEA/Westaf/CAC funded initiative focusing on US/Mexico cultural exchange. As a result, the California Arts Council has provided travel support to 15 presenting organizations in California to participate in this conference. The LAWTF was one of 15 organizations selected to receive a scholarship to attend. It's co-founder, award-winning television, film and stage actor Adilah Barnes will attend the conference on behalf of the LAWTF.

Gateway to the Americas is organized by two cultural institutions from Mexico: Fondo Nacional para la cultura y las Artes (National Fund for Arts and Culture) and Contacto Cultural (also known as US/Mexico Fund For Culture). These institutions are under CONACULTA (Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes), National Council for Arts and Culture, which is the NEA equivalent.

Gateway to the Americas is one of three projects developed which focus on CA-Mexico cultural exchange. The other two consist of participation of five members of California Indian Basketweavers Association (CIBA) at Sinaloa's Encuentro Yoreme. CIBA members participated with an exhibit of baskets, traditional dress, and traditional games and dolls; the third project will be a one-month artists residency exchange between Oaxaca and California.
