ENROLLMENT
BEGINS FOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND ADVANCED WRITING WORKSHOPS AT BARNSDALL
GALLERY THEATRE - HOLLYWOOD
(Hollywood,
Calif.) – Enrollment begins for the “Character Development Workshop,”
an intense 12-week acting
workshop beginning January 27th and continuing for 12 consecutive
Tuesday evenings until April 13th from 7-10 p.m. at the Barnsdall
Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood (323) 660-4254.
This
anticipated workshop, being taught by award-winning stage actor Adilah
Barnes, co-founder of the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, focuses on
improvisations, scene study, and monologue work utilizing the techniques of
Stanislavski, Uta Hagen and Viola Spolin.
It explores character and script analysis and moment-by-moment
listening and truthful communication. Admission
is by interview only.
Enrollment
also begins the same week for “From Page to Stage,” a 12-week writing
class offered by the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival beginning
January 28th and being given on the following 12 Wednesday nights
from 7-10 p.m. also at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre.
“From
Page to Stage,” is an advanced writing class focusing on the development
of solo shows based on personal stories. The majority of students
participating in this workshop are returning students of Barnes who began
developing their solo shows through writing exercises offered during the
Summer and Fall of 2003. The
second level class presented works-in-process as staged readings on December
5, 2003 at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre.
The prerequisite to this workshop is to either be a continuing
student who has already given written structure to her or his solo show or a
new student who has already begun developing their solo show on page and is
ready to begin defining the work structurally and by staging.
Acceptance is based on an interview.
Ella
Joyce, who recurs on the popular television series, “My Wife And Kids” is
among an intimate group of Barnes’ students who have continued developing
their voices through the pen and has found “From Page To Stage” to be a
safe environment in which to play. “How
wonderful to have found a safe place to call home. This workshop has become that for me—a safe place to create
and grow. Adilah is truly a
gifted peer, who is able to share her gifts, and to inspire and stimulate
others to explore their inner writing talents.
I think she performed a minor miracle on me,” states Joyce.
“I am
delighted and feel honored that the majority of my writing students who
committed to this series of writing workshops last year are still with my
class. It has been absolutely
astounding to witness solo work take form from a sense of memory, image, or
thought. Now we move to the
stage,” Barnes states.
Barnes,
a veteran actor has toured her own solo show, “I Am That I Am: Woman,
Black” nationally in 35 states and internationally in Europe and the
Caribbean. She is also writing
another solo show based on the life of her mother “Just
Call Her A Woman Of The Soil.” Listed
among the who’s who in “The Actor’s Guide To Qualified Acting
Coaches” by Larry Silverberg, Barnes has coached some of Hollywood’s
hottest stars. Her students
have included Jada Pinkett-Smith (for Set
It Off); Toni Braxton (for Play’d
and Kingdom Come); Benjamin Bratt
(Law & Order); Lauren Lane (The
Nanny); comedian Don “DC” Curry; and
many others. According to previous student, Kym Whitley, “Adilah is
intense, she’s not easy, but she never gives up on you and pulls out your
best.”
Barnes
has an upcoming dramatic appearance portraying historical figure, Ida B.
Wells opposite Hilary Swank in HBO’s cable movie, Iron-Jawed Angels,
premiering at 9:30 p.m. on February 15, 2004. Her first book, On
My Own Terms: One Actor’s Journey will be available at book stores by
Summer of 2004.
