“FOOTPRINTS”
BENEFITING UCSC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, L.A. CHAPTER
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
( Hollywood , Calif. ) –
To usher in the new LA Chapter of the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC)
Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre
Festival (LAWTF) is hosting an afternoon of theatre and reception.
“Footprints,” a benefit event, being held on Saturday, March 27th, 3:00
p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Boulevard
, Hollywood , California .
Celebrity Ted Lange of
“Love Boat,” headlines the “Footprints” program by performing
excerpts from his solo show, “Behind the Mask: An Evening of Paul Laurence
Dunbar,” actor Clarinda Ross performs her autobiographical play “From My
Grandmother’s Grandmother Unto Me,” performance artist Anna Homler
performs in “Breadwoman,” and actor Juliette Jeffers performs an excerpt
from “Batman and Robin in the Boogie Down,” a piece that explores the
relationship between she and her younger brother.
An hors d’oeuvres reception will follow the performances after
which guest speaker Adilah Barnes, co-founder of the Los Angeles Women’s
Theatre Festival and UCSC alum who was a scholarship recipient herself will
address the post performance group.
The LA Chapter's goal is to
establish a $20,000 endowed scholarship fund for incoming UCSC students from
the Los Angeles region. Once
the $20,000 goal is reached, the Scholarship Fund will become active.
The interest from the endowment will be awarded each year to a
student who has accepted his or her admission to UCSC and who has
demonstrated dedication to getting the most from their UCSC education, as
well as financial need. Students
of color and women are especially encouraged to apply.
“We are establishing this
fund to support students who need financial support and in response to the
sky-rocketing costs of higher education.
The LA Chapter wants to do its part in helping deserving students
make it to UC Santa Cruz” states Roz Helfand.
Adilah Barnes, co-founder
of the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival is also a Cowell College alum
of the UCSC campus. An
independent Black Drama major, she is an award-winning stage actor with
numerous stage, tv and film credits that include the award-winning Erin
Brockovich, Murder By Numbers and the recurring role of “Anne Marie” on
Roseanne for five seasons. She
can currently be seen in a new, national VISA commercial and is being
portrayed as the historical character of Ida B. Wells in HBO’s movie, Iron
Jawed Angels (airing through April, 2004).
Barnes also hosts her own
Internet radio show “Adilah,” on BlakeRadio.com.
She has remained an active alum having served since 1998 on the
elected Alumni Council where she presently holds the office of VP of
External Affairs. Her autobiography, “On My Own Terms: One Actor’s Journey
will be released later this year. She also gives back to the campus by
participating in admission faires, mentoring and providing summer
internships at the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival. She also
co-founded the UCSC Black alumni affinity group, Black Escargot, in 2000.
She has toured her solo show, “I Am That I Am: Woman, Black” in 35
states and has taught at numerous institutions. She currently teaches acting
privately in Hollywood
All proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles Chapter Scholarship Fund.
