BARNES’ ONE-WOMAN SHOW LOS ANGELES, CA, February 20, 2006 - One actress takes you on a spiritually enlightening journey spanning over 400 years of struggle and triumphs… all in one evening and encapsulates the lives of seven prominent African-American women who helped shape the history of women of color. Adilah Barnes begins nationally touring her historical play I AM THAT I AM: Woman, Black and delivers an unforgettable evening in theatre as each of these remarkable women are revealed in stunningly honest clarity. I AM THAT I AM: Woman, Black is a trip through time that will remain with you forever. During this jubilant and captivating journey through time, Barnes brings to life on stage, the lives of Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Mary McLeod Bethune, Zora Neale Hurston, Lorraine Hansberry, Angela Davis and Maya Angelou. "I AM THAT I AM: Woman, Black" celebrates the ability these women had to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and achieve their life callings by their undaunted faith and belief in themselves. I AM THAT I AM: Woman, Black has been described as a "whirlwind trip through time, beginning in the years of slavery and leading up to the recent years." (The Daily Kent Stage, Kent State University, Ohio). "She lifts off the pages of life and times of these women, instead of reading it in literature." (Iowa Daily News). Barnes concludes each show with a post-performance dialogue with the audience where she discusses the characters she portrayed and herself. -more- -2- I AM THAT I AM: Woman, Black has toured throughout the United States in 35 states (Sweet Briar College in Virginia will make the 36th state), coast to coast from Alaska to Maine and California to Florida and the Virgin Islands. In 2000, Barnes' show became international when it received international acclaim in the Rotterdam Fabrikaat Festival in Holland. Barnes, a veteran television, stage and film actor, and Executive Producer of the Los Angeles Women's Theater Festival has received national acclaim for "I AM THAT I AM: Woman, Black." She is best known to film audiences for her roles in Universal's award winning Erin Brockovich, HBO's Iron Jawed Women and Little John and to television audiences for her role as "Anne Marie" on ABC's Roseanne, for five seasons. Barnes has also guest starred on CBS' Cold Case, and WB's Gilmore Girls (both of these shows are still on the air!) and many other television series. She has also coached some of Hollywood's hottest stars including Toni Braxton, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Benjamin Bratt, Kym Whitley and Lauren Lane. As a lecturer, Barnes' previous lecture venues have included Iowa State University, Central College (Iowa), Michigan State University, Lynchburg College (VA), South Dakota State University, Modesto Community College (CA), Mansfield University (PA) and Valley High School in Sacramento. Keynote addresses have also been given at such schools as the University of California at both Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara and the Booker T.
